How to prepare for sacred medicines

Preparation is a very important element when working with sacred medicine. A combination of a conscious diet, meditation, and clear intention are the best forms of care we can give ourselves in order to receive the powerful healing benefits of the medicines.

The following recommendations will help you take full advantage of your time and energy invested in this work. But if you cannot fulfill all of them (such as eliminating meat or stop smoking) this does not mean that you shouldn’t participate in a retreat. Every person has their own rhythm and will reach the goal that are right for them.

The only part where we must be totally strict is when it comes to any prescription medications that you take. Please be completely transparent in sharing this information with us as some of these medications can interfere with the work of the sacred medicines so must be suspended.

The medicine that requires the strictest diet is ayahuasca. Following we share some general recommendations for Ayahuasca and other sacred medicines at Mundo Gente Medicina.

General Guidelines

We are body, mind and spirit, so the teachings will come in different forms during the retreat. The more conscious we are of these different aspects of ourselves, the better we will be able to assimilate them during integration.

On the mental plane, our intention is very important as it helps us understand the powerful teachings that come to us through emotions, images and sounds. Sometimes it is not easy to understand them rationally, but as we link them to our specific intention, we can have a better understanding as how to integrate them into our daily lives.

On the physical plane, apart from diet, we recommend that you have a conscious relationship to water. Make sure you are well hydrated for the work you are engaging in. Proper exercise such as stretching, breath work will help you feel more comfortable in your body which is the vehicle that receives and sustains the experience.

On the spiritual plan, plenty of time for silent contemplation is very helpful. Closing your eyes and connecting to the breath helps us tap our inner being. This practice is very beneficial during your encounter with the medicines and helps you navigate the experiences without losing your center.

Diet and Other Recommendations

Ayahuasca (Caapi vine) contains Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOi) these means that it will inhibit the Monoamine Oxidase enzyme in your liver, this will allow the D.M.T. to go to your bloodstream but the MAO is also responsible for processing the Tyramine, this is why is important to avoid foods with high amount of this amino acid (Tyramine), otherwise could reach toxic levels for your body and cause a Serotonin syndrome.
For this reason, it is important that you avoid this food from 1 to 2 weeks prior to the ceremony:

  •  Tea (black and green)
  • Cacao
  • Fermented foods
  • Dairy products
  • Processed sugar
  • Junk food
  • Peanuts
  • Alcohol
  • Red meat
  • Pork
  • Canned and processed food
  • Spicy foods

We also recommend to avoid this before the ceremony:

  • Cocaine
  • Tobacco
  • Amphetamines
  • Opiates
  • Cannabis
  • MDMA
  • And any other street or designer drugs.
  • Sex. (3 days)

There are certain medications that must be suspended weeks before consuming plant medicines such as anti-depressants and morphine.

VERY IMPORTANT:  If there are any medications that you take regularly or sporadically, please let us know BEFOREHAND so we can give you proper advice.
